Handful of Sand Chapter 40 Page 3

Sandy glanced at the wall in panic. She turned to crawl under the bed. Instead, she bumped her head painfully against the solid bottom of the queen-size bed. There was no space for her to crawl under, not even if she were the size of a mouse.

Well, if she were a mouse, she would be a harder target to hit. She could scamper out the door to safety. How she wished she were a... That Was Not The Time For Her Mind To Wander!

Sandy saw a person appear above the bed. As he stepped around the bed towards her, he raised his pistol.

Sandy stared at the silencer of the pistol. Oh god, oh god, she was going to die, she was going to die!

Suddenly, the man turned and shot in the direction of the window. There was a light bump on the floor on the other side of the bed. The man ducked as a pair of flat metal objects flew past where his neck had been and embedded themselves in the wall. He raised his gun and fired again.

Then the dark shape of a slight person appeared beside the man and knocked the gun out of his hand. The newcomer hit the man hard on the side of his head with a cylindrical object in her hand, then once more on the back of his head when the man bent over. The first intruder crumpled to the ground.

"Sandy?" the second person called.

Sandy recognized Selina's voice. She peeked out above the bed.

The newcomer slipped her weapon into one of her long sleeves. She was about Selina's size.

"Come on, Sandy, let's go. It isn't safe here." Selina kicked the gun into the corner.

Sandy rose to her feet. Gunfire could still be heard from the front of the room.

"Out the window," Selina urged. With gloved hands, she pulled out what appeared to be pieces of metal the shape of stars from the wall. She was wearing a beanie over her short hair and a light raincoat over dark clothes. She did not have her glasses. The tall girl paused to retrieve something small from the desk before following Sandy out the window.

Outside, the girls made their way across the backyard under the rain. Again Selina paused to pull something from one of the bushes. The item she took looked like a little box attached to a length of wire. Then she helped Sandy climb over the back fence.

The house at the back was occupied. The light at the front porch was on.

Selina led Sandy round the house, crouching low and to the shadows. Once they were on the sidewalk of the street beyond the house, the girls started walking normally, though in a hurry, as pedestrians would when caught in the rain.

Gunshots could still be heard, though as little snaps at their distance.

Sandy followed barefooted beside Selina, half-running to keep up with her friend's brisk pace. She pulled her wet T-shirt over the private place between her legs with both hands.

"Why are you walking like that?" Selina asked.

"I don't have any panties on." Or pants.

"You'll draw more attention to that fact if you walk like that," Selina advised.

Feeling a little self-conscious, Sandy tried walking with her hands by her sides.

Selina led her up to a small house a short distance along the street. A red car was parked in the driveway. The tall girl unlocked the front door of the house. In the living room, she picked up a green duffel bag and a brown leather travel bag.

Standing at the front door, Sandy shivered. "Can I change into something?" Sandy asked, "I'm wet and cold."

"No time," Selina told her. She passed her the green bag. "You can change in the car."

Selina led Sandy to the car on the driveway. It was the same one that Sandy had seen Selina drive before.

"Get in the back," Selina ordered Sandy.

Sandy obeyed.

Selina got in the driver's place and dumped her bag on the passenger seat. She started the engine and drove.

"You'll find some clothes and shoes in your bag," Selina told her, "You can get changed."

There was enough space in the back seat for Sandy to change out of her wet T-shirt. "Where are we going?" Sandy asked once she was dressed in a dry pair of sweats. She had also found a hand towel to dry her hair with.

"I'm going to hide you for a while."

"Won't I be safe with the police?"

"The people after you are good. They've found where the police were hiding you." After a pause, Selina added, "Also, the police weren't doing a good job. That house wasn't very safe if someone could just shoot you from the bedroom window."

Sandy felt a chill down her spine that was not from the cold. If she had not seen that assassin raise the gun earlier, she could have been dead.
