Boys, huh.
It was after school and Annie was seated on a bench in front of the gymnasium with a textbook in her hands and her mind on boys. Sure she could have asked Reese to help with maths. But the idea was not very appealing to her. Perhaps she was simply more comfortable studying with girls.
But did Annie have any interest at all in boys? What about those two seniors that walked by? The boy on the left, maybe too ordinary. He had no distinguishing feature. But the other? Ugh, did he have to walk with his nose up in the air?
How about that blond with a basketball jersey under his jacket, carrying an armful of balls? The way he easily walked, the spring in his step, he must fun to be around. Oh, one of his basketballs fell off... and was rolling towards her.
Annie laid aside her textbook and got off the bench. She crouched and picked up the ball with both hands.
"Hey, thanks," said the blond as he walked up to her.
He was certainly tall. Though he was not the tallest basketball player she had ever seen, he was still like a giant to little Annie.
"Put the ball here." He gestured with his chin to a spot between two of the balls he was carrying.
Annie did as he asked.
"You're cute," he said, flashing a smile full of teeth and charm.
"Thanks," Annie replied shyly, taken in by the glint in his teeth.
"I've got to go practice," he told her as he walked in the direction of the gymnasium. "Name's Darren, by the way," he cheerfully added back over his shoulder.
Wait... Darren... blond... basketball player... That was the subject of Carrie's affection! Did Darren like Annie!?
Annie picked up her textbook, handbag and schoolbag and fled in the direction of the school gate to wait for Mother. She did not want to meet that boy again. Who knows what would happen if Second Sis caught her with him!
Then that evening, as soon as Second Sis was home from basketball practice, she went straight into Annie's room calling out her little sister's name.
"Yes?" asked Annie with forced calm from her desk. However, her nervous heart beat harder.
"Annie!" Second Sis repeated her name, "Darren's got a crush on a girl!"
Word appeared to have traveled fast. Annie's heart shifted to a higher gear and accelerated.
"A freshman!" Carrie told her, "A small girl with black hair!"
Her heart floored the accelerator and was moving into the red zone.
