Gloriously Messed-up Chapter 17 Page 4

Second Sis returned later that night.

Annie had been fidgeting in her room. Though she was sitting at her desk with a book open, her thoughts were elsewhere, wondering what Sis' state of mind was. She really should check on Carrie and see if she was going get murdered in her sleep.

Not that it would happen. It was more likely that Second Sis would do something worse, something that Annie would not find out until morning when she found herself dangling from the roof or buried alive somewhere.

She definitely could not sleep while worrying about Second Sis. She would not be able to study either. Annie was too embarrassed to ask her parents for help on what might be a trivial matter. If only Big Sis were not uncomfortable with her. Then she would have no problems sleeping in the safety of Big Sis' room. What had happened between Big Sis and her in the past?

Whatever happened could wait. She had to sleep tonight. The best way to settle her heart would be to ask Second Sis directly. If Second Sis strangled her there and then, she would not have to worry about sleep anymore.

So Annie crept out of her room and listened at Carrie's door. Second Sis was listening to music. Rock, it appeared. Well, here goes... after a moment to gather her courage.

Annie took a deep breath and knocked.

After a brief exchange of words, Second Sis let Annie in.

Annie was still alive, so far. Now into the lioness' den.

Carrie went back to lounge on her bed. The radio on the nightstand nearby was the source of the music. A few textbooks and pieces of clothing were strewn about the place. Her purchases from the riverfront were sitting on her desk, still in shopping bags. She had a basketball at one corner and the room had the sweet fragrance of an air freshener.

"Sis, are you okay?" Annie asked.

"Why would I not be?" Second Sis replied innocently.

"Oh, um... because of Darren?"

Second Sis shrugged a shoulder. "Oh, I'm over him."

"Sis, I don't..."

"Don't worry about that." Carrie looked at her younger sister's matching blue eyes. "If he likes you, he likes you. You can have him."

Annie was still standing. She wanted to be ready to run, just in case. Second Sis indifference was unnerving.

"It's just that I had a crush on him since I was a freshman," Carrie babbled on, "I never did tell him. Never had the courage."

The blond girl sighed and poked her duvet. "Oh, well. He's yours now." She gave Annie a weak smile.

"But Sis, I..."

"Uh uh," Carrie interrupted her with a dismissive wave of her hand, "I don't want to hear about it. I'll be the bigger sister here and let you have him. Just leave me be."

There did not appear to be any trace of malice in Second Sis. So Annie left her sister's room, certain that she would survive the night.

However, Sis had not wanted to hear her explanation. Carrie did not know the truth, that there was nothing between Annie and Darren. What would happen if Second Sis were to find out?

That was a worry for another day.
