Handful of Sand Chapter 40 Page 2

The movie Shrek 2 was on after the news. Watching animated characters make the funnies was much more interesting than news of current affairs. A good show, salty food, passably comfortable seat - yes, that was the kind of life Sandy hoped for after she was rich.

With better, more expensive comforts, of course. A soft sofa with no lumps beneath its cushion. A large wide-screen television. Endless supply of warm food and sweet drinks. Sandy was going to buy all that for herself!

(By now, there should not be any more doubt to the reason why Sandy was gaining weight!)

Occasionally during the movie, one of the officers would get up to check outside the windows. But it did little to distract Sandy from her show. She watched a second movie after the first. It was late at night by the time the second show had ended. The thunder had long stopped but the rain continued.

Sandy excused herself to go sleep.

It was the end of another day in hiding. It was Tuesday and there were only three days left before her fortune would come true.

After she had brushed her teeth, Sandy went into her bedroom. In the dark, she removed her bra from under her T-shirt and tossed it behind the nightstand. Back at home, when she had shared her room with another girl, she would think nothing of stripping off in front of Ditz or Celeste. At the present, she had a whole room to herself, and she had no need for tidiness either. She dropped her sweatpants on the carpeted floor. She tossed her panties onto the desk, right on top of a couple of books beside the desk lamp.

Sandy remembered that her wallet was on the desk, next to the books and on top of her fortune card. Still clipped to the wallet was the monkey figurine - the one that Selina had given her.

Briefly, Sandy wondered where Selina was at that moment.

Sandy was about to pull on a pair of shorts when she thought she saw movement at the bedroom window opposite her. Then she realized that it was the shadow of a person, watching at the window.

Her room was on the ground level! That meant that a peeping tom like that creep could easily spy on her while she was changing! It was dark, however. Maybe he could not see much.

"There's someone at the window!" Sandy screamed. The cops would get that creep. That would teach him to peep on her.

Instead of running like she expected him to, the figure raised something in his hand. The moment she recognized the long barrel of a silencer attached to the tip of a pistol, Sandy dropped her shorts and dove behind her bed.

Footsteps arrived at her bedroom door. The door swung open. "Sandy, what's..."

Officer Murphy never finished her query. There were two muted gunshots from the window along with the simultaneous sound of cracking glass. At the same time, there was the louder sound of a pistol discharging from beyond the bedroom door.

Then something heavy hit the floor from beyond the bedroom door.

"Murphy!" the other officer cried from the living room.

There were more gunfire, but from the front of the house. They sounded distant, like they came from beyond the front wall. Those were answered by two shots from within the house.

There were no more shots from the bedroom window. Instead, Sandy heard the window being smashed and cleared of glass. Then a pair of feet landed on the floorboards. Heavy footsteps walked towards her from the other side of the bed.
