Thunderstone (card, strategy)

There are those games where the player builds a deck and duels other opponents. Thunderstone by Mike Elliot is interesting in the sense that the players build their decks as they play the game. Each player starts off with a basic deck. Then the players add heroes, monsters, shopping purchases and diseases to their decks. The aim is to collect cards that are worth Victory Points (VP). Other cards collected help the players to achieve this.
A typical turn layout.
There are two sources of VP (that I've encountered so far). The main source is by beating up monsters in the dungeon. The other is to collect level 3 heroes. In order to beat up monsters, the player has to muster enough Attack to match the monster's Life. Heroes, equipment and supplies contribute to Attack.
Shopping at the village mall.
At the start of the game, unless there is a weak monster available, the player will typically go shopping in the village to buy equipment and supplies or hire heroes. Gold for that turn is determined by the gold value of all cards in hand. Unless the card mentions 'Destroy', spending gold does not cost the player any cards.
Challenging a monster in the dungeon.
Instead of shopping, the player may spend his or her turn in the dungeon and challenge a monster. If the player is successful, the monster is added to the player's deck. A monster adds a one-time XP bonus and is usually worth gold for village shopping - they impress villagers for some reason. More importantly, most monsters have a VP value, which adds to the player's final score.

Typically, if the player draws a hand with a good Attack, he or she would explore the dungeon. If he or she draws cards with gold, a visit to the village would be a good idea. And if the player has a bad hand, there is the 'Rest' option where the player may 'Destroy' a card in his or her hand. This is usually used to remove weak or useless cards from the deck, which is likely the cause of the bad hand in the first place.

It should be noted that there are limited cards available in the village shopping mall. When XP is spent to level up a hero at the village, the relevant card is taken from the mall to upgrade that hero. Thus it is not possible to level if the card is not available.

(Officially, it in the game, it is known as 'village'. But I like to call it 'the mall' since it has so many selection of goods and it has monopoly.)

For each type of hero, the mall presents the level 1 version initially. Once the level 1 cards of a type of hero are gone, the mall will start having level 2s and later, level 3s available. This presents an alternate strategy where the player builds an economic deck to hire those level 3 heroes to add VPs to his or her deck.

However, there are monsters with much higher VPs than level 3 heroes. Level 3 heroes would be helpful in taking down these tough monsters, but it is still possible to win with lesser heroes backed by good equipment and supplies.

The game continues until someone claims the Thunderstone. As monsters are defeated, the Thunderstone will eventually appear in the dungeon. When the monsters in front of the Thunderstone are defeated or somehow removed, the player who caused that to happen will claim the Thunderstone, which is worth 3 VPs.

There is a Tutorial to explain the basic gameplay. However, the more intricate rules and strategies are up to the player to figure out. The learning curve is hard but Thunderstone is an enjoyable game once the player figures it out.

It should be noted that only the Core Set of the game is available for free. There are additional sets, which contain new and interesting cards. These sets must be purchased. Think of it as purchasing expansions to the game. The extra cards in the expansions may be previewed in Skirmish from the Main Menu.
Final results - second place!

Reactance 2 (shooter)

Reactance 2 by Matt Parzyk is a shooter, or more accurately, a bullet hell shooter. The player controls a ship out to blast other ships. During that, lots of bullets will fly in all sorts of patterns all over the game screen.
Not a bullet hell, yet.
One notable feature is how clear the bullets are represented. The player's bullets are less visible while the opponent's dangerous bullets are bright. This makes it easier to tell immediately where the danger is.

The player's ship's contact area is allegedly 0.5 pixels large. This makes it possible to 'squeeze' between bullets. There is a slow time function that allows the player to, well, slow time to help with the squeezing. This function consumes Focus so it will not last forever.
The setting I use to beat levels without damage.
The player's ship may be customized with different weapons and mods. There are different weapons, each with different attack patterns and damage potential. There are also different ship hulls available. Along with that, there are mods that give different abilities to the ship and the weapons.
Now it's a real bullet hell.
For the most part, the game is pretty simple. It only started to get challenging on the fourth boss, Hyperion. However, the final boss, Atropos, is a real challenge compared to the earlier part of the game.

There are achievements in the game that award the player with bonuses such as extra damage or HP. Beat each boss with the Warp Core equipped to charge the Warp Core for one of the achievements.

To summarize, Reactance 2 is a well-made bullet hell game. The amount of polish that goes into the game makes it enjoyable to play. The real fun is in the boss battles, where the challenge is to learn the pattern of attacks and figure out the safe spots. Plus, the game has good music too.
Warp Core at 100% and still nothing!?
I am still working on getting the Warp Core to 120%. To do so requires beating the Boss Run with the Warp Core equipped. This is very difficult, requiring lots of patience and skill. I am still training to accomplish that.

Update 21 June 2012:
This is the setup I use for the Boss Run:
Setup for Boss Run.
I tried using the armor hull for the boss run. While HP regenerates fast, the ship is slow. This presents a lot of trouble against Hyperion 2.0. Some of Hyperion 2.0's attacks are best avoided by zooming to different ends of the screen and the armor hull is too slow for that. At least, the armor is thick enough to take the resulting damage.

Also, note that Hyperion 2.0's guided missiles detonate if they hit the edge of the screen. So dodging at the last moment at the edge of the screen can reduce the number of annoying missiles.

The armor hull is way too slow to avoid Atropos 2.0's whip. Though the armor hull can take a few hits from the whip, I was hard pressed to survive. It was much easier to dodge with the speed hull.

Currently, my best is Atropos 2.0 at around 35-50% of its thicker HP bar left. Still a long way to go to beat the boss run since I have not gone up against Atropos 2.0's 'cage' attack where two of its glow orbs form a cage around the ship.

Update 22 June 2012:
I've been challenging Atropos (the normal final boss), in order to study his attacks in preparation for Atropos 2.0. Each of its attacks has a method to avoid.
Atropos drops glowing green flowers.
For example, for Atropos' 'field of flowers' attack, there is a path in between the rows of flowers where the ship may follow safely. In the screenshot above, the path continues in the eight o'clock direction.
Hold still for the first part of Atropos' 'cage' attack.
For Atropos' 'cage' attack, there is a minimum safe distance to be. At that distance, hold still, then dodge the second wave of projectiles. As soon as possible, get to the minimum safe distance again and hold still. The next 'cage' attack will come soon after the second wave of projectiles.

Atropos 2.0's may have faster and/or more projectiles. At least, the projectiles in the boss run seems that way to me.

Update 23 June 2012:
Beat Atropos 2.0. I got this unlocked:
Best ship hull!
The unknown hull makes the boss run much easier. Plus it's innate weapon does considerable damage too. The hull is definitely needed for this challenge:
Hidden Boss!
Tartarus appears after Atropos 2.0 in the boss run. Not sure if the Warp Core has to be equipped to face Tartarus - too lazy to find out. Tartarus looks like the player's ship in the original Reactance.
Finally done with the Warp Core!
Beating Tartarus finally charges, or rather overcharges, the Warp Core. The Warp Core then provides the following bonus:
The Warp Core has some use.
I have no idea what the secret code does. I tried typing it in the game. I tried selecting levels according to the code. Nothing. Or maybe it unlocked something but did not tell me.

Monsters' Den: Chronicles, Tricks I Learned

I recently had some free time on my hands so I decided to devote some serious time to Monsters' Den: Chronicles. One of the fun parts of the game is discovering tactics and tricks and then taking advantage of them in battle.
Croca with a two-handed weapon.
I had earlier equipped Croca the Captain with a Shield as a tank. I had even invested in Endurance. However, he originally started with a spear. So that had me thinking: What if I gave him a two-handed weapon?

As I feared: Croca was terrible at tanking without the Armor Rating given by a shield. Especially since he has that flashy Battle Standard of his attracting attention.

Then I discovered that the two-handed weapon does lots of damage. The trick is to beat up the baddies before they can hit Croca. It does take a little judgement to decide who to attack first. I would go for someone weak but with high damage-dealing potential like a Ghoul. The Doomcaller is also another target I would go for early.

A side note: since that Battle Standard attracts Enemy Attention, I usually have a Ranger ready to cast Nature's Balm.
Parthian Powering up.
I also found a quick trick to charge Parthian the Marksman's Power. It leaves Parthian unable to do anything useful for a short while but he may spam skills once he is ready.

First, I have him cast Swiftness on himself to boost his Quickness (Cost: 15 Power, 0.5 Action). On his next turn, I switch his Fighting Style to Hunter's Focus and cast Eagle Eye (Cost: 0! Power, 0.5 Action) on him. The latter two gives an additional +5 Power Regeneration as seen on the screenshot above.

I Pass each time it is his turn, giving Parthian 10 Power at each Pass. Pass costs 0.5 Action, which comes faster since I had Swiftness cast on him. And Eagle Eye stays until Parthian performs an action. So I keep Passing until Parthian has enough Power or an emergency emerges during the battle.
Swiftness is very useful!
I discovered that Quickness is very important. Higher Quickness means more Actions. The manipulation of Quickness can make a battle go very easy.
It is good to cast Swiftness on someone on Cooling Breeze.
For one, an early Swiftness spell at the start of battle on the right character can make the battle so much easier. Usually I cast it on the Ranger so he may cast Swiftness again on another character.

Casting Swiftness on a character standing on a Cooling Breeze terrain is also good. Since Cooling Breeze helps that character with Power management, Swiftness allows that character to spam skills more often.
A Rogue can keep baddies busy with Cripple.
Another thing to consider is reducing the Quickness of baddies. Less Quickness on their side means less attacks coming from them (good news for Croca above).

The Rogue's Cripple inflicts a heavy Quickness penalty on the target. A Rogue on Swiftness can easily hinder two baddies on the front with Cripple for quite a while, leaving the rest of the party free to beat up someone of significance.

I like to use Cripple on the big slow ones like the Bone Horror. They will hardly get to deal heavy damage.

Another skill to consider is the Cleric's Holy Light which will slow all Undead as a side effect along with the Accuracy penalty it normally inflicts. There is also the Mage's Freeze though the Quickness penalty inflicted is so-so.

Do note the target's resistance when applying Debuffs. Nothing is worse than wasting Power and an Action trying to Cripple an opponent with 100% Resist Wounds.
Only 50% Resist Wounds!
Lastly, something I found a little funny:
Someone woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning. :p

Attack of the Troop of Goblin Raiders, Interlude

Hello, this is Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace and welcome to the Narration Room. You may know me from my previous work in the Fernham High series. I played Connie Baker.

Anyway, we wanted to try something different with the Adventures of Heroes Who Talk Too Much. One of the producers thought of putting together a story in the Narration Room instead of in the studios. If you do not know, there are no cameras in the Narration Room. The techs have set up mikes so the actors and actresses can speak their parts and they are recorded into text.

Just between you and me, I think the higher-ups are trying to cut costs with the money they'll save on props and costumes and background and all that.

We have Billy Townsend from the Fernham High series play Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman. We have Gloria Billings, also from the Fernham High series, play Taciturn Female Healer. And we have Mr Fowler from Handful of Sand play Typical Bespectacled Mage.

That's all for now. Hope you enjoyed the story!

Attack of the Troop of Goblin Raiders, Part 5: The Epilogue

Goblin Runner
I, Goblin Runner, arrive with a message for the Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman!

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
I am Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman with my Big-Ass Sword! Deliver your message, Goblin Runner!

Goblin Runner
Goblin Warlord sends you, Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman, a reminder of our appointment on the field of battle, of the Troop of Goblin Raiders against the Defenders of Ubiquitous Backwater Village, this afternoon, on Meadow of Nothing But Grass.

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Please inform Goblin Warlord that my party shall depart from this inn of Goblin Village Across The Meadow immediately after lunch. If Goblin Warlord is departing at the same time, mayhap we shall make the journey together!

Goblin Runner
I shall relay the message of Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman to Goblin Warlord!

***

Goblin Runner
I, Goblin Runner, also have a message for the Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
I am Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace and you may admire my shining beauty!

Goblin Runner
Goblin Warlord sends a reminder that you Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace still owe him 100 gold pieces from last night's card game. If you do not settle the debt by lunch, Goblin Warlord shall field only females for today's battle!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Erm, Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman! I am feeling unwell! Can I sit this battle out?

Attack of the Troop of Goblin Raiders, Part 4: The Debrief

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Explain to me something...

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Yes, Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Isn't this the part when we all celebrate with drinks and food and all-night dancing and stuff after a quest!? We're still sitting around a table with papers and quills and ink!

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Ah, but Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace, the Debrief is an important part of any quest! It is when we gather to compare notes, identify what we did right, what we did wrong and where we can improve!

Typical Bespectacled Mage
Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman took classes on Party Management in the School for Aspiring Adventurers. Didn't you attend such classes where you schooled?

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Uh, well, I did take Party Management at the College for Glamorous Heroes... to manage parties with food, drinks and all-night dancing and stuff... We had parties five days a week at college...

***

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
We have driven back the Troop of Goblin Raiders and we have collected the rest of our gold reward! I shall claim that our quest to Defend the Ubiquitous Backwater Village a success!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
I wouldn't call it a complete success, seeing that I lost all my Hit Points. I won't be able to go on any quest for a week!

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Then shall we pay for a Resurrection for you, Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace?

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Ah, that shan't be necessary. That's going to eat into our profits, isn't it? Besides, we don't have any quests lined up. I can just take the week off to relax and do some shopping.

Taciturn Female Healer
So is that the final decision of the matter concerning the Resurrection of Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace?

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Yeah, yeah. Just give me my share of the gold. Goodness, you're starting to sound like Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman.

Taciturn Female Healer
Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman, the Blacksmith of Ubiquitous Backwater Village offered a quest to find his only son who was lost in Eerily Dark Woods.

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Wait a minute!!!

***

Typical Bespectacled Mage
I'd like to point out my mistake of underestimating the amount of Mana Potion that I require for this quest.

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Yes, that was a mistake that could have cost us dearly. However, I still have half-a-case of Healing Potions and Taciturn Female Healer still has a Bottle of Healing Potion. I propose that we reduce our expenditure on Healing Potions in the future!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Wait a minute!!!

***

Typical Bespectacled Mage
I must say that that was a great bluff that you pulled on Goblin Warlord. If he had held his ground, he would have eventually won.

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
It was not a bluff. I merely left out the fact that you, Typical Bespectacled Mage, were running out of Mana Points and would in short time be unable to protect the flank of Taciturn Female Healer with your Shield Spell!

Typical Bespectacled Mage
They'll be back next week, you know.

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
And Ubiquitous Backwater Village shall hire us to meet the Goblins on the field of battle again!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
You planned this scheme of extorting gold from the village, didn't you?

Attack of the Troop of Goblin Raiders, Part 3: The Battle, Round 2

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Gather around fellow heroes and listen to my plan! Taciturn Female Healer and Typical Bespectacled Mage will clear the path of Goblins so that I may confront the Goblin Warlord who is their leader.

Taciturn Female Healer
Simple enough.

Typical Bespectacled Mage
I shall do as you say.

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
And I'll provide fire support?

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
You, Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace, shall be keeping all the females of the Troop of Goblin Raiders engaged!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
What!? How!?

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
All the females in the Troop of Goblin Raiders shall be coming after you, Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace, like a pack of wolves after a prey. Typical Bespectacled Mage, that is still the plan of the Troop of Goblin Raiders, is it not?

Typical Bespectacled Mage
Yes, it certainly is.

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
How do you know that!?

Typical Bespectacled Mage
I casted a Listen spell that let's me listen in on the Troop of Goblin Raiders where they are gathering to listen to Goblin Warlord's plans. Goblin Warlord will send all Female Goblin Stabbers and all Female Goblin Archers after Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace in order to maintain morale.

Goblin Warlord
Hey, Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman! Can we start the next Round yet!?

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Let it begin, Goblin Warlord!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Ah, wait!

Goblin Warlord
All Female Goblin Stabbers and all Female Goblin Archers, after Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
MUMMY~!!!

***

Taciturn Female Healer
Wow, Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace can really run!

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
I agree with your assessment!

Typical Bespectacled Mage
You still have one Case of Healing Potions left, right?

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
I certainly still have one Case of Healing Potions!

Typical Bespectacled Mage
You could have given a few Bottles of Healing Potion from that case to Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace since she is now attracting lots of aggro.

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
I dearly wish you had made that excellent suggestion a little earlier.

Taciturn Female Healer
Hey, hey, we should beat up the Goblins while they are watching their females run before they attack us while we are watching our female run!!

***

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Goblin Warlord! You shall now face Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman!

Goblin Warlord
Come, Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman! The Ubiquitous Backwater Village cannot have paid you enough to meet your doom!

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
I have equipped my party with the best of equipment 200 gold pieces can afford! And I have spent 100 gold pieces to provide food and lodgings for a whole week to improve morale! In the end, I shall still have a profit of 200 gold pieces to distribute to my party!

Goblin Warlord
What, 100 gold pieces on food and lodgings? Really? You should come visit our Goblin Village Across The Meadow. Lodgings are of fair quality and the cost for a party of four shouldn't be more than 20 gold pieces. However, I can't say much about the food.

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
There is but one inn in Ubiquitous Backwater Village and their prices are decidedly cutthroat! I suppose I shall save 50 gold pieces if we lodge in the inn you have described and then walk over to Ubiquitous Backwater Village for dinner.

Perhaps Goblin Warlord would like to share how much was spent on his troops?

Goblin Warlord
Oh, I spent 600 gold pieces on Goblin Stabbers - half of them male, half of them female. Equal opportunities, mind you. I also paid 750 gold pieces on Goblin Archers. Again 50-50 male-female ratio.

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Ubiquitous Backwater Village at its present state of development may only generate 1000 gold pieces a week. And their coffers are less the amount they have paid us in advance. You, sir, are running at a lost.

Goblin Warlord
Ah, but I plan on occupying the village and collecting the gold generated each week. That would make me a profit in the long run!

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
That is indeed profitable. However, in order to do as you say, you would need to maintain a guard on the village.

Goblin Warlord
Which I plan to do with the survivors of this battle.

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
At the rate that the battle is progressing, shall I point out that Taciturn Female Healer and Typical Bespectacled Mage appear to be on the verge of dispatching all your males. You will not have enough to hold the village for long with only the females!

Goblin Warlord
By the Toe-bones of the Greater Flame Gargoyle, you're right! Sound the retreat!

Attack of the Troop of Goblin Raiders, Part 2: The Battle

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Explain to me something...

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Yes, Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Why are we fighting the Troop of Goblin Raiders on this Meadow of Nothing But Grass?

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
That is to spare the village and its population the horrors of war. By stopping the fight before it gets to their homes, we will ensure that the good people may live their lives peacefully!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Yes, but we're standing in the open here...

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
To defiantly meet the advancing forces of the opposing side!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
...and half of the Goblins entering the other end of the Meadow of Nothing But Grass are carrying bows...

Typical Bespectacled Mage
Shields up!

***

Typical Bespectacled Mage
Explain to me something...

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Yes, our reliable Typical Bespectacled Mage!

Typical Bespectacled Mage
You are the Fighter with almost all of the Healing Potions...

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
That is correct.

Typical Bespectacled Mage
She is the Archer-

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
-of Epic Grace!

Typical Bespectacled Mage
And she is the Barbarian with lots of Hit Points...

Taciturn Female Healer
That I am!

Typical Bespectacled Mage
And I am the Mage, the one with the least number of Hit Points...

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
You have described our entire party exactly as they are!

Typical Bespectacled Mage
So why are the three of you hiding behind me!?

Taciturn Female Healer
The Goblins are raining arrows on us, there's no cover on this Meadow of Nothing But Grass and you're the only one with a Shield (Spell)!

***

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Our opposition, the Troop of Goblin Raiders, have expended their supply of arrows!

Typical Bespectacled Mage
Lucky! I just ran out of Mana Points and Mana Potions!

Taciturn Female Healer
They are charging!

Cliched Spikey-Haired Swordsman
Taciturn Female Healer, let us march forth to meet their charge!

Taciturn Female Healer
Okay!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Did you really finish a whole Case of Mana Potions?

Typical Bespectacled Mage
A whole case, less the two I gave you. I guess I underestimated the number I require.

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
I guess I can return you the two you gave me.

Typical Bespectacled Mage
That's charitable of you.

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
Hey, the few Goblins whom those two knuckleheads let through! The Mage now has Mana Points and is now a threat again! Some of you, go for him!

***

Female Goblin Stabber #4
Hey, Female Goblin Stabber #7 stabbed that Archer, didn't she?

Female Goblin Stabber #8
In the face too!

Female Goblin Stabber #4
But that Archer is still pretty isn't she?

Female Goblin Stabber #8
Gorgeous too!

Female Goblin Stabber #4
And those items of her's make her look nice, don't they?

Female Goblin Stabber #8
+30 to Charisma with Set Effect!

Female Goblin Stabber #4
That Archer is too pretty! She's the enemy of all females alive!

Female Goblin Stabber #8
All female Goblins attack that Archer!

Gorgeous Lady Archer of Epic Grace
MUMMY~!!!
