Handful of Sand Chapter 10 Page 2

Her roommate was usually more fun than that. However, Celeste had been pretty stressed ever since she started her part-time job the previous month. The older girl had spent much of her time on schoolwork and had little time to play.

Maybe Sandy could spend some time with her other housemate, Juneida. Hang out together, gossip about school life, listen to music. Juneida's room also had a double-decker bunk bed. One of the beds was unoccupied at the moment since its previous owner had moved out. That unoccupied bunk would be perfect for Sandy to stretch out on.

Excited about spending time with Juneida, Sandy stepped over to the room next door. There was a handwritten note taped onto the door to the middle-schooler's room. It read, "Studying. Do not disturb! That means you, Sandy!"

That was odd. Sandy was sure that note was not there when she had passed earlier.

Sandy had nowhere else to go but back downstairs. She found Momma Lois in the living room watching the television with the volume set low.

"Hey, Momma," Sandy greeted as she brought her basket of clothes into the room.

"Hush now, child. Little Petra's asleep." Momma Lois leaned over the arm of her comfort chair to check on the little one sleeping in the cradle beside her. "What're you doing with those clothes?"

Sandy sat on the sofa and laid the basket beside her. "I dropped them when I fell at the stairs. They need to be folded again."

"That was the bump I heard earlier? You don't always watch where you go. You best watch your step, child. You don't want to get hurt."

"I'll be careful, Momma." Sandy started sorting out the clothes to fold.

Her guardian was watching an old movie, one that was not very interesting. There was not even color.

Certainly there were more interesting shows at that hour. Why not watch one of those?

(Sandy was oblivious to the fact that Momma Lois had chosen that black-and-white show because it was quiet for little Petra, and also for herself, so she could settle down for sleep. Now do not go waking them both up, Sandy!)

Bored to sleepiness with the colorless show, Sandy instead indulged in her favorite pastime: dreaming of what to do with her promised wealth. She could hire a maid to fold all those clothes. The maid could even do the laundry. The maid could do all her chores!

She wished her riches would land on her lap sooner. Then she would be free from her chores. She would have more time to herself, time to... she would find something to do. With lots of money, she could go to the cinema everyday. Or, she could buy herself a whole home theater system. Never again would she be bored with nothing to do.

Sigh. When was her wealth going to come? Her fortune card could not be wrong, could it?

When the clothes had finally been refolded, Sandy bid good night to Momma Lois and climbed back upstairs. She was beginning to feel sleepy herself and would like nothing more than to lie down in bed. Yawn!

At that moment, Sandy slipped on a step. She fell, inadvertently throwing her basket of clothes up in the air.

Sandy was so glad for the extra thick carpeting on the steps.
