Handful of Sand Chapter 12 Page 2

After the school bell had rung for the last time that day, Sandy packed her bag. Once her books and stationery were in her bag, she sat back to relax. She bid goodbye to each classmate who greeted her on his or her way out the front door.

She had to wait for ten minutes, time that was like an eternity for her. Sandy wished that time would pass faster.

"Hey, Sandy." Esper came up beside her desk, hugging her schoolbag. "Not going back yet?"

Selina stood behind Esper.

Sandy smiled. "No, I've got something to do."

"Oh, okay then. See you tomorrow!" Esper said as she stepped towards the front door with Selina.

"Hey, ah, Esper," Sandy called her classmate.

Esper spun back. "Yes?"

"What was so funny this morning?" Sandy asked, "Everyone was laughing when the bell rang."

Selina's hand was instantly up to hide her grin.

"Oh, er..." Esper fumbled for a moment, "Randy made a funny face. Got to go! Bye!" She bolted from the class before Sandy could shoot another question.

Sandy stared at the door through which Esper had fled. Somehow she felt that her curly-haired classmate was hiding something.

Then Sandy remembered her business with Connie. She looked at her watch. Another two minutes to go. One more minute and she would go upstairs, she decided. That one minute seemed even longer than those that had passed before. She spent her minute staring at her watch, mentally prodding the seconds to go faster.

When the minute was finally up, she hurried up the stairs to the top floor. There were only a couple of students walking along the top floor corridor.

Connie was nowhere to be seen.

Briefly, Sandy wondered if she was on the right block. Connie had said the top floor of that building, right? Sandy had assumed it was that building. The teenager decided to wait. She was far too lazy to climb all the way down and up another building just to check.

Then Connie appeared at the head of the stairs. Sandy had the place right after all.

"Sandy, this way." Connie led her to the girls' washroom on the same level. After the redhead had checked that there were no other girls in the toilet stalls, she turned to Sandy. "So, have you reconsidered my offer?"

"Yeah. Um, why are we talking in here?" Sandy asked.

"Well, I don't think you'd want Annie to know," Connie replied.

"Yeah, you're right," Sandy agreed.

Connie adjusted her black schoolbag beside her. "Annie sometimes hangs around after school, especially on Mondays and Wednesdays so we've to be careful where we meet."

"I see." Sandy nodded her head in understanding.

"So you said you'll work for me?" Connie asked her.

"Yeah. What do you want me to do?"
