Handful of Sand Chapter 30 Page 3

Saki was being chased by a tall girl with short blond hair. It must be Annie's sister. The blond chased Saki into the school building behind Sandy via another entrance.

Sandy debated whether she should turn around and return to the school building just to see what would happen. It took a moment of deliberation before she decided she had the time. She went back into the school building.

Standing in the main corridor of the ground level, Sandy looked down to the other end where the other entrance would be. The girls were not there. There were other students in the hallway but Saki and her pursuer were nowhere to be seen.

Maybe they were upstairs.

However, Sandy did not find the girls on the other levels of the building. Tired of climbing the flights of stairs, Sandy gave up and decided to go home. As she exited the school building, she spotted Annie's sister, alone, walking towards the gymnasium. Saki was nowhere in sight.

Had the Asian been murdered?

Well, Sandy would not know where to find the body anyway. Such a small body would be easy to hide. Maybe she would learn more in the morning.

It was a lovely cold sunny day for a bicycle ride home.

On the morning break of Monday on the following week, Esper returned to class with Selina and the latest copy of the Fernham Post. The curly-haired girl was about to announce her find when she noted that both Sandy and Ariel were at their respective desks, separate from each other. Her excitement died then.

"You two are still at it!?" Esper said with exasperation to Sandy, who was closer to her.

Sandy kept quiet.

Esper sighed. "Come on," she called, "there's an interesting article today in the Fernham Post. Surely you can set aside any problems you have to read the paper with your friends." She walked towards Ariel's desk in the middle of the class.

"Maybe I can't," Sandy said.

"It's about Saki," Esper added over her shoulder.

Sandy was immediately interested. She joined Esper and Selina at Ariel's desk.

The story of Saki and Carrie was on the front page. It must have been an unexciting week for such a story to make the headlines. Apparently, there had been an incident on Thursday the previous week. Carrie had chased Saki all around the school grounds.

Sandy wished that she had been there to witness that. What had she been doing during that time? Oh yeah, she had rushed home early that day.

Anyway, Carrie had chased Saki into the gymnasium where she had proceeded to pull the clothes off the poor girl!

Wow, Sandy had never imagined that such a thing could happen in her own school. Well, she could once she had thought about it. There were those stories she had heard before that Annie had done something similar. A whole family of sisters that pulled clothes off other girls! Sandy noted to herself that she should be careful around Annie or any of her siblings.

The story in the paper went on to say that the heroic reporter and a certain Darren Colson had stopped Carrie before she had gone too far.

Such interesting things did happen in high school. Maybe Sandy should hang around school more often and see whatever else might happen.

"Who knew Carrie was capable of that?" Ariel remarked.

"Do you think Saki's okay?" Esper asked.

"I think so," Sandy assumed. She had seen Saki in school on Friday and earlier that day, though she had not seen Annie's older sister since Wednesday's chase. "She looked okay."

"I think Saki will be fine," Selina said.

Ariel looked back at the article on her desk. "But it didn't mention why Carrie was after Saki in the first place."

Hmm, yeah, that important bit was left out of the paper. If Sandy wanted answers, she would have to ask Saki, whom she presumed knew nothing.

Or Annie, whom she did not want or dare to approach.

Oh well, maybe she would never find out.
